New training material facilitating Narrative Theatre in Burundi and DRC

New training material for facilitating Narrative Theatre in Burundi and D.R. Congo

In November 2011 the WTF publication: “Collective Healing: a social action approach, supplement to support sustainable use of Narrative Theatre” was published. This publication contains of supplementary training material to the Intervention manual: ‘Healing communities by strengthening social capital: a narrative theatre approach; training facilitators and community workers’ (Y. Sliep, 2009)’. The publication is the result of a joint project of WTF and its Burundian partner Centre Ubuntu. In this project supplementary training material has been developed to support the Narrative Theatre approach that is applied by Centre Ubuntu in Burundi. The training material was written by Dr. Y. Sliep and five trainers of Centre Ubuntu: Placide Ntahonshikiye, Fr. Emmanuel Ntakarutimana, Anicet Nsabimana, Nicolas Nimenya, Léonidas Ndayizeye.

The new material goes beyond the original manual and is an important step in making the Narrative theatre methodology sustainable. The material is aimed to develop skills and capacity of the local committees that facilitate the Narrative theatre in the communities in Burundi. The material explores five topics that have been identified as relevant for the Burundian context: (Ubuntu) values, trauma, conflict resolution and mediation, leadership and development.

The supplementary material consists of a supplement (published in English and Kirundi) and six electronic training modules (in English and Kirundi that can be downloaded here. The material should be used together with the original narrative theatre manual. In the English preface that you can be download here more background information is given about these training modules.

Challenges of sustainable mental health care and psychosocial support

The report 'Challenges of sustainable mental health care and psychosocial support in low and middle income countries' was been published in May 2010. The research was conducted by Ms Petra Aarts, researcher and owner/director of Psychotrauma, onderzoek & advies, on behalf of the War Trauma Foundation, and was financially supported by the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS).

The primary subjects of this report are the continuity and sustainability of psychosocial projects, and the factors that may impact them. Possible barriers that may exist to achieving sustainable psychosocial interventions have been researched, as well as the factors that can be crucial in strengthening these interventions. Also examined were the specific demands of sustainability in psychosocial programmes in (post) conflict situations, and the extent to which these differ from development and/or humanitarian programmes.

The result is an easy-to-use guide, intended for organisations and individual psychosocial aidworkers in (post) conflict areas. The report has been sent to over 200 humanitarian organisations around the world. The WTF will also benefit by using this report as a guide in the implementation of its projects.

The report can be downloaded free of cost, or purchased as a hard copy, from the War Trauma Foundation: info@wartrauma.nl.
